Payment methods Netherlands
Consumers can choose from many different payment methods in the Netherlands. Below is an overview of the most important ones.
iDEAL: most commonly used payment method in the Netherlands
The most widely used payment method in the Netherlands is iDEAL: about 70% of all online payments are made with this payment method. It is therefore of great importance that iDEAL is available in your webshop, if you sell your products and/or services in the Netherlands.
With iDEAL, customers pay for a purchase directly, through their own bank. The payment cannot be reversed, unless you use the option to return your order.
Credit cards
Credit cards are also a widely used payment method in the Netherlands. Dutch consumers use credit cards mainly when placing orders with foreign webshops. Credit cards offer purchase protection, which iDEAL does not.
The Dutch market has several credit card providers, such as MasterCard, VISA and American Express.
PayPal
PayPal offers the ability to pay both immediately and later. PayPal allows both consumer-to-consumer and consumer-to-business payments. A PayPal payment can also be made from the cell phone or tablet, without leaving credit card or bank details. Because of its buyer protection, PayPal is a very popular payment method in the Netherlands.
Dutch online shoppers also regularly choose to pay via PayPal. In the Netherlands, this payment service already has more than two million account holders.
After sales/preferred payment methods Netherlands
Riverty, Klarna, Billink, In3 and SprayPay are commonly used after sales payment methods in the Netherlands. These forms of payment are becoming increasingly popular payment methods in the Netherlands.
Apple Pay
Apple's payment service has been available in the Netherlands since June 11, 2019. This means that you can effortlessly offer Apple Pay in your webshop. Currently, ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, bunq, Monese, Revolut, N26 and Knab support this mobile payment method.
It is unclear when other smaller Dutch banks such as SNS Bank and Triodos will follow. According to various sources, SNS Bank is in talks with Apple and Triodos promised to offer support for this mobile payment method soon.
