How does Multibanco work?

Multibanco is a trusted payment method that your customers can safely use to pay in your webshop. Payments with Multibanco can be made in two ways:

  1. Through the checkout page of your webshop: your customer chooses Multibanco as the payment method during checkout. The details can easily be entered in the secure online Multibanco banking environment. The Multibanco page shows details of the purchase, including the specific item or service and the total amount of the purchase. By pressing the continue button, your customer authorizes the payment. After the authorization, you receive a payment confirmation and your customer's order can be shipped.
  2. Through an ATM: Another way to pay with Multibanco is by paying in cash at one of the 11,000 ATMs. After your customer makes the payment, you receive a payment confirmation and you can ship the purchase.

What is Multibanco's process?

Multibanco has two payment flows: your customers can pay via online internet banking or through an ATM.

Multibanco via online internet banking.

  1. Your customer chooses Multibanco as the payment method in the checkout of your webshop.
  2. The payment page provides your customer with an entity number, the reference of the purchase and the amount.
  3. Then your customer logs in via online banking and confirms the payment by agreeing to the known payment details.
  4. The customer has paid and you can prepare the purchase for shipment!

Multibank via an ATM.

  1. Your customer selects the "checkout with Multibanco" option at one of the 11,000 ATMs.
  2. Through the ATM, the customer receives the known payment information -and details.
  3. If approved, your customer confirms the transaction by paying.
