Below is an overview of the main payment methods in France for your webshop.
Carte Bancaires: most widely used payment method in France
In France, Cartes Bancaires (formerly: Carte Bleue) is the most popular online payment method, with over 60 million cardholders. About 60% of all payments are made with Cartes Bancaires.
The Cartes Bancaires card is usually co-branded with Visa or Mastercard. That combination allows Cartes Bancaires to make both credit and debit card payments.
PayPal
In France, PayPal is a popular and widely used method of online payment: as many as 7 million French people have a PayPal account. A PayPal payment can be made from desktop, cell phone or tablet, without leaving credit card or bank details.
Because of its buyer protection, PayPal is a very popular payment method in France.
Credit cards
Credit cards are also a common payment method in France. With a credit card, consumers shop online and pay later. Products purchased online with a credit card are insured for at least 180 days against damage, loss and theft.
The French market has several credit card providers, including Mastercard, VISA and American Express.
Maestro
A small portion of online payments in France still go through Maestro. That will be a thing of the past from July 2023 as Maestro will then be replaced by Mastercard debit cards.
