Payment methods Belgium

Payment methods Belgium.

The best-known payment method among Belgian consumers is Bancontact. Like iDEAL, Bancontact payments are completed directly online through one's own familiar banking environment.

But which other payment methods are there in Belgium? And how do you best offer all payment methods in Belgium in your webshop?

It is relatively easy to start a Belgian Web store. One barrier could be the language since forty percent of Belgium's inhabitants speak French. In addition, it is important to pay attention to the packaging law.

The Belgian packaging law is stricter than you are used to in the Netherlands. You must comply with this law when you sell packaged products via your webshop to Belgian consumers. If you put more than 300 kilograms of packaging material on the Belgian market, you have to register. For less than 300 kilograms, you do not have to do anything.

Payment methods Belgium

Below is an overview of the main payment methods in Belgium.

Bancontact: most used payment method in Belgium

Bancontact is by far the most popular payment method in Belgium. Bancontact is similar to the Dutch iDEAL: consumers make a payment in the familiar banking environment, often using the bank app or debit card.

With Bancontact, customers pay for a purchase directly, through their own bank. The payment cannot be reversed, unless you use the option to return your order.

Credit card

Credit cards are also widely used as a payment method in Belgium. The security offered by credit cards and the international possibilities make this a very popular payment method.

The Belgian market has several credit card providers, such as Mastercard, VISA and American Express.

Paypal

PayPal, as in the rest of the world, is also widely used in Belgium as a method of online payment. The advantage of PayPal is that the purchase can be paid afterwards. It is also widely accepted worldwide, and does not require a credit card.

Klarna

Since 2020, Klarna has also been operating in Belgium. The retrospective payment method is rapidly gaining popularity there. By offering Klarna in your webshop, customers have up to 30 days to pay for their purchases afterwards, without additional costs or interest. And although customers pay later, you get paid immediately.
