Secure payments in (web) stores and apps with Apple Pay
Apple Pay is the easy-to-use international mobile payment service offered by Apple. The service provides your customers with a simple, secure method of paying for their purchases using familiar devices (MacBook, iPhone, iWatch or iPad). Apple Pay enables secure payments in both online and physical shops and in apps.
Apple Pay was first launched in America in 2015, and became available in the Netherlands on 11 June 2019. Apple Pay is currently only supported by ING in the Netherlands, but ABN Amro has recently hinted in an update to its terms and conditions that it will also support Apple Pay in the future. This payment option is more popular in other countries. The exact market share is not yet known, however past experience has shown that Apple’s loyal fan base is always keen to try out anything new that it brings onto the market.
How does Apple Pay work?
The card details are retrieved from the Apple device and verified using TouchID, FaceID or the access code, in complete accordance with the latest Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) standards. PAY. then receives these details.
PAY. processes the payment through the linked debit card (Maestro) or credit card (VISA/Mastercard), and receives the payment through the chosen route.
Activate Apple Pay in your online shop
Once you activate Apple Pay, the Apple Pay payment option will appear on your checkout page. If a valid card is linked, we will start the payment process on the Apple Pay payment screen. In the absence of a valid card, your customer will receive the option of adding one or choosing a different payment method. If Apple Pay is installed and a working card is found, we display Apple Pay on both the credit card and Maestro screens. You do not need to do anything if you are using a PAY. PIN terminal in your physical shop. Your customer will already be able to use Apple Pay on their iPhone/iWatch to make the payment.

At the moment, Apple is also developing its own credit card and will therefore function as a card issuer through the Mastercard network.
This means that a payment processed through Apple Pay using an iCard issued by Apple will be processed in the same way as a normal credit card payment.
